Fa Mulan in Mulan

Mulan as she appears originally in Mulan.

Mulan is the only child of Fa Zhou, a former war veteran, and Fa Li. When her father was called up to join the army but is unable to do so, Mulan takes his place, pretending to be a boy named Ping. Although at first it is difficult for her to adapt, during the training, she ends up being one of the best soldiers.

But, after seeing Shan Yu and several of the Huns emerge from the snow, Mulan runs away to warn her companions. However, they do not pay attention to her, and finally the Huns end up kidnapping the Emperor. Even so, Mulan, with the help of his army friends, confront Shan Yu and the Huns, until they defeat them and save the Emperor, who shows his gratitude to Mulan for her actions.

Descendants[]

Trivia[]

  • Mulan means "magnolia blossom" in Chinese. It could also mean "wood orchid".
  • Despite her status as a Pure Good heroine, Mulan possibly has one of the highest kill count for a Disney character, as she buried alive a whole Hun army, from which only six men survived with none of their horses, with an avalanche she caused. However, she did it to save her friends and China, as had not been for her idea, her friends and herself would have surely been all killed by Shan Yu and his Huns.
  • Mulan is the first Disney Princess to technically not be royalty―she wasn't born a princess nor did she marry a prince.
  • Her pink bridal outfit is very often confused for a kimono (Japanese), but is actually the Chinese garment hanfu.
  • Mulan spends most of the time in her training uniform, her battle armor, or her blue infiltration dress, while in the merchandise, she is shown mostly in her "normal" dress or her pink matchmaker dress.
  • When Mulan disguises herself as a man, her eyelashes and double eyelid disappear and her eyebrows grow thicker, but when she dresses feminine, her eyelashes grow back, her double eyelid comes in again, but her eyebrows remain thick.
  • She is the third Disney Princess to not be white. The first was Jasmine, the second was Pocahontas, and the fourth was Tiana, the fifth is Moana, the sixth is Raya
  • She has the same singing voice as Jasmine, provided by Lea Salonga.
  • Mulan touches her hair a lot because animators noticed that Ming-Na Wen did.
  • In the Disney Princess line-up and dolls, Mulan is often shown as being more tanned than the others besides Jasmine, Pocahontas, and Tiana. However, in the new 2013 type line-up and their merchandise, Mulan is shown as the palest one, when it should have been Snow White.
  • All of Mulan's dresses in the first film had a blue bodice and a red sash.
  • The recoloring of Mulan's redesign may be due to the fact that red and gold were often considered by the Chinese as the colors of communism or because in ancient China, the royal color was gold and red was the color of luck and prosperity.
  • In the book, Rise of the Isle of the Lost, it's revealed that she has a son and that he is actually older than Lonnie.
